The City of Dawson is launching a new Water Metering Program.

We want to charge customers fairly for our water services and ensure that they are sustainable well into the future.

Due to freezing weather conditions, the final meter installations for 2022 will be completed by November 4th. Installations will recommence in the Spring of 2023.

How we’re doing it:

2020 | Water Meter Planning: A plan was developed for the City to purchase, install, and use new water meters to better understand water usage in the community and update the current flat-rate billing structure with a metered billing system. The plan considered various water metering technologies and selected the best technology to address Dawson’s specific needs.

Winter 2021-2022 | Select Water Meter Contractor: The City engaged in a rigorous process to hire a contractor to complete the installation of new water meters under clear terms and conditions. Neptune Technology Group has been awarded this contract.

Fall 2022 - Summer 2023 | Install Water Meters: Water meters will be installed by Neptune Technology Group for all water service customers in Dawson (both residential and commercial). Bleeders will be assessed and reconfigured to ensure they are working properly. Residents can expect to be contacted by a Neptune representative as their work in the City commences.

2022-2024 | Water Meter Trial: This will be a time of observation and information-gathering for water customers and the City. Rates will not change during the trial, giving customers and the City time to raise and respond to any issues that may arise. Information will be made available on grant programs and strategies to reduce water consumption, and expectations will be set regarding updates to the billing system.

2024 | Update Water Rates Bylaw: Based on the information collected throughout the Water Meter Trial, the water and sewer services bylaw will be updated to include a metered water billing rate structure that is equitable and easy to understand.

How it affects you:

Meters will be installed by a qualified contractor from Neptune Technology Group, who will ensure that all bleeders are operating correctly and that customers know how to use them. Appropriate bleeder use will be discounted from water bills, and reminders will be circulated when it’s time to turn bleeders on or off each season.
